Redefining Success Metrics in Team Dynamics
When thinking about team dynamics, I’ve struggled with gauging individual team members’ success and thought this can’t be just me; this must pose a challenge for many leaders. The question I asked myself was: should one's performance be measured solely against my own skills or benchmarks, or should it be a comparison with their peers?
As a technical manager who at one time wrote lots of code as an individual contributor, it was hard for me not to compare the team members who I managed to myself and my performance as an IC. But I knew this was not right. Still, I found it hard to commend individual achievements within the team when they didn’t feel like my achievements. This may inadvertently foster an environment of skewed expectations and demotivation. Each team member brings a unique blend of skills and experiences to the table, like comparing apples to oranges. These comparisons often overlook the diverse contributions and potential of team members.
So, a more equitable approach would involve benchmarking individual performance against peers within the team. This methodology not only offers insights into team dynamics and collaboration but also cultivates a spirit of healthy competition and mutual growth. It encourages individuals to strive for excellence while fostering a supportive team environment.
Like myself, leaders should encourage team members to measure their progress against personal goals and aspirations. Success is multifaceted and subjective, and growth trajectories vary from person to person. By providing guidance and support tailored to individual needs, leaders empower team members to chart their own paths to success.
I was able to gauge their progress once I realized each individual’s personal goals and the team's goals and set expectations. Redefining success metrics in team dynamics makes it necessary to depart from traditional hierarchical comparisons. True success lies in fostering an environment where each team member can thrive, contribute meaningfully, and realize their full potential. So, while the measure of success may differ for each individual, the journey toward collective greatness remains a shared pursuit.
It is important to understand individuals’ goals and aspirations to recognize and celebrate their achievements. Be sure to recognize them as they occur and acknowledge them often. It’s also a good idea to reset goals and expectations regularly.
